Even if I love Antonioni, I added it in my favs becouse I love dry, naked, mediterranean landscapes. This place remind me of my thirsty land. Puglia too can be so dry. Desert is coming and this beautiful shot is screaming it loud. And, last but not least, there’s too much eros in my favs, I need some tanatos to balance it.

I doubt you have so many mad starved and thirsty goats in Puglia or Bari and the rest of the coastal towns would be flooded or gone thirsty to extinction. Goats should not be subsided by the E.U. On the contrary they should be totaly banned. It was a good idea some 7000 y. ago but not anymore. The same is for hunting etc.
I’m not going to have children in some kind of “our-own-Ethiopia” and loose them in a land and rock avalanche afterwards.

I saw “The Man Who Planted…” on TV ages ago. My son who was 6 then, was very excited. If I remember well, it’s based on a true story from before the war. There is a similar story about a woman who planted oaks in Ikaria. They called her ‘Lunny’ Maria Sarantaina.

The story of Lolo-Maria Sarantaina is clear and true. I think that many of her oaklings died because there was war and famine and she had no strength to climb the mountains to water them. She was believed to be mad in her time but now they have raised a small stele in her memory.

*** btw, did you know that there is a league of jet pilots who plant trees because they feel bad about the greenhouse gases caused by jet flights?

Εκτός από την Αιθιοπία που πολύ σωστά αναφέρεις (που το θυμήθηκες;), λίγοι γνωρίζουν ότι αυτός ήταν ένας από τους λόγους που καταστράφηκε η οικονομία της γειτονικής Αλβανίας. Οιτσελιγκάδες εκεί ήταν από τους βασικούς υποστηρικτές του Εμβέρ Χότζα. Εξαιτίας της αποψίλωσης των δασών και της ελεύθερης βόσκησης, η ύπαιθρος ερημοποιήθηκε τόσο ώστε ακόμα και τα περίφημα Κινεζικής κατασκευής υδροηλεκτρικά φράγματα γέμισαν άμμο και σταμάτησε η παραγωγή ηλεκτρικού ρεύματος. Αυτή τη στιγμή η Αλβανία όπως και η Ελλάδα είναι από τους μεγαλύτερους εισαγωγείς ζωοτροφών.

Και φαντάσου πως όταν έγραψες το blog ήταν μοναχά η αρχή….Δεν θα συμφωνήσω με τον ΑΚΚ πως η ελεύθερη βόσκηση είναι αιτία των καταστροφών. Οταν υπάρχουν αρκετοί βοσκότοποι υπάρχει φυσική τροφή για τα ζώα. Οταν οι βοσκότοποι μετατρέπονται σε βιλλίτσες και τσιμεντοποιούνται νομίζω πως είναι πολύ χειρότερη η καταστροφή……

@ ‘simonsterg’ : welcome back! (I heard all about in ‘tragopodaros’ space). Well, yes, taken on July 4th (!) 2005 with my friend Nana’s camera which looks like a spaceship and behaves like one ! I’m sure one day she will invent a special camera with an automatic setting : “Greek light” . My achievement is that I know where to look and of course that I wake up early. There are so many “Aegean sunrises”, 90% of them shots on the way back from nightclubs, tokens and souvenirs of good night outings. But this was a fresh, fully awake shot taken on purpose. So, yes, the beauty here did not remain concealed and thank you for the tag.

@ ‘alk_is’ : thank you! I somehow felt I had to post this as well as the other my latest “coastal dawns”. I had to pay back for the theatening “thalassographs” (see set) of last winter -all dark green and grey and mauve and violent. Not that I didn’t like them. It was thrilling but I had to pay back.

It’s not a writer’s block; it’s lobotomy. Look at the waves as they go up and down at dusk after the wind has died out. So fully they wash the mind from thoughts. This is the meltemi, the Etesian winds of the ancients. In the morning the mountains are clouded and the tourists wonder, “Is it going to rain?” Of course not. This is only wind, friendly breeze; full of good vapor, makes the land go wet and cool down. Cleans the beach from cigarette buts; provides good sleep as well and sweet dreams –my friend, the northwestern Maistros. Blow on blow on. Bring me news.

***Sorry AKK, I didn’t fulfill your request to broadcast the “Play Safe with Waves -3/1 rule of thumb” in this entry. I wanted to. Because I understand the need for some safety. But as soon as I uploaded the photo, I got carried away. And you know…, a thought crossed my mind; as a sailor’s wife maybe I shouldn’t think or talk about playing with the waves anymore. It’s not for decency’s sake. It’s superstition! Let Nana and the others do that for me from now on. Non?

these days when the wind blows they say “oh it’s gonna catch fire! oh it’s gonna be no ferry! oh it’s gonna be no swim!. Anf when it’s cloudy they say “oh it’s gonna rain!” And when it’s hot, they say etc.
But you (and Nana in her own wild funny way) say, WE LOVE IT! To you the wind brings news. To Nana it dries the sweat from under her breasts.

speaking of kishmet I remembered our blog friend ‘Can’ who wrote to me the other day and said that “Meltem” is a common female name in Turkey. I suppose it’s something like “Breeze” (the Americans like this name a lot) or the Greek Avra (Αύρα). It is good to know that the name has a positive sense verified by tradition.
So when the meltemi spoils your beach days, think of it as a beautiful woman and …take the mountains! Go hiking.

(Μπαμπα κουλ γερο πουρό αγγελούκο …η οικογένειά σου κι όλοι οι κοντινοί σου άνθρωποι πρέπει να είναι περήφανοι για σένα. Πραγματικά ήταν ένας οικογενειάρχης σαν κι εσένα αρχηγός στη δική μου φάλαγγα όταν διασχίζαμε τα χωράφια στο Ροστόκ. Από τον Εύδηλο στις Ράχες με τα πόδια

- Μια παλιά κλασική διαδρομή ξαναγεννιέται -

Σε μια γωνιά στην κάτω πλατεία του Ευδήλου υπάρχει ένα μικρό πορτοκαλί σημαδάκι. Είναι η αρχή. Το επόμενο είναι λίγα μέτρα πιο πάνω. Κι ένα άλλο πιο πέρα. Κι ακόμα ένα. Μετά ένα βελάκι. Μετά μια πορτοκαλί πινακίδα. Κι άλλο σημαδάκι… κι άλλο βελάκι… ξανά πινακίδα… Μοιάζει με «Κυνήγι του Θησαυρού». Ναι, έτσι είναι. Υπάρχει θησαυρός. Πολυτιμότατος, μάλιστα. Μια πολύωρη, χορταστική διαδρομή με τα πόδια μέσα στη φύση και την ιστορία της βορειοδυτικής Ικαρίας.


Από τη διαδρομή μέσα στον Εύδηλο

Από τον Εύδηλο μέχρι τη παραλία του Κάμπου η διαδρομή είναι «περίπατος». Ακολουθώντας τη σήμανση, θα οδηγηθούμε στη συνέχεια στα «Παλάτια», δηλ. στον αρχαίο οικισμό της Οινόης. Βαδίζοντας στο «αρχαιολογικό» μονοπάτι, σκαρφαλώνουμε στο λόφο. Φτάνουμε στο «Ωδείο» και μετά περνάμε από την άλλη πλευρά, στο Μουσείο και την Αγία Ειρήνη. Τώρα ήμαστε πια στην παλιά επίσημη στράτα για τη Πέρα Μεριά.

Η σήμανση οδηγεί στον πρώτο οικισμό, το «Κέρος» -τώρα πια μοιάζει συνοικία του Κάμπου. Κι εδώ αρχίζει η ανηφόρα. Να μην το ξεχνάμε. Πάμε για Ράχες που είναι μια ορεινή περιοχή.


Aπό τον Κάμπο για τη Πηγή

Ξαφνικά στη περιοχή «Κουντουριδιά» (δηλαδή, Χαρουπιά –μεγάλο δέντρο που υπάρχει ακόμα υπάρχει εκεί) και καθώς στα πόδια μας απλώνεται ολόκληρη η κοιλάδα του Κάμπου (άραγε κάποτε ήταν λιμάνι, όπως λένε;), βρισκόμαστε να βαδίζουμε σε μια καλοκτισμένη, πολύ φαρδιά πέτρινη «ρύμη». Είναι ένα έργο πολύ εντυπωσιακό -αληθινή «λεωφόρος» για τα μέτρα της εποχής. Λένε ότι την έφτιαξαν οι εξόριστοι με το μεράκι, το πάθος και τη διάθεση προσφοράς που τους διέκρινε. Σίγουρα πρόκειται για σπάνιο μνημείο αρχιτεκτονικής που το μόνο που θέλει για να φανεί, είναι να καθαριστεί από τη βλάστηση.

Στην Κουντουριδιά η ρύμη χωρίζεται. Αριστερά πηγαίνει για Μάραθο και για Φραντάτο. Μετά συνεχίζεται για το βουνό, στο δάσος του Ράντη κι ακόμα πιο πέρα. Όμως και να θέλαμε, δεν μπορούμε να πάμε από εκεί. Λίγο πιο πάνω η ρύμη είναι φραγμένη με συρματοπλέγματα –χωρίς ποριά! Το ξεχνάμε λοιπόν και στρίβουμε δεξιά. Επιμένοντας στο αρχικό σχέδιο, πάμε για την Πηγή. Διασχίζουμε πεζούλια με κήπους, ρυάκια και στέρνες που η ρύμη αριστοτεχνικά δρασκελίζει. Θαυμάζουμε σπάνια δέντρα, παλιά σπίτια, ένα λιοτρίβι. Καταλήγουμε στο παλιό καφενείο που τώρα είναι κλειστό. Στην αυλή του απολαμβάνουμε άπλετη, υπέροχη θέα στα βουνά: Αθέρας και Κοσκινάς.

Το μοναστήρι της Θεοκτίστης είναι το τελευταίο «φυλάκιο πολιτισμού». Εδώ όσοι κουράστηκαν, μπορούν να πάρουν το δρόμο του γυρισμού. Γιατί απ’ αυτό το σημείο και πέρα αρχίζει η πραγματική περιπέτεια. Μπροστά στον πεζοπόρο ανοίγονται πλατιές παρθένες εκτάσεις, σχεδόν ακατοίκητες, με μόνο δάση και λαγκαδιές: Φείδος, Λίδι, Χαλικιάς, Κεραμωτό, Πλατέδων. Η διαδρομή «τρυπώνει» κυριολεκτικά διασχίζοντας με ασφάλεια συναρπαστικούς αγριότοπους (wilderness) κατά μήκος μιας ζώνης που (ως εκ θαύματος) δεν έχει υποστεί τις συνέπειες της ελεύθερης, ανεξέλεγκτης βόσκησης, ούτε υπάρχουν οικοδομές που πληγώνουν το τοπίο. Βλέπει κανείς μόνο το βαθύ σκούρο πράσινο, το σκληρό γκρίζο του βράχου και στο βάθος το απαλό θαλασσί του πελάγους. Που και που κάποιος κρυμμένος παλιός οικισμός, τρία-τέσσερα σπίτια μονάχα, ερείπια πια, ίσα που φαίνονται. Ο πεζοπόρος τα βλέπει. Φαντάζεται τον τρόπο ζωής των παλαιών Ικαριωτών. Αυτό γίνεται «επί ίσοις όροις». Όπως αυτός, έτσι κι εκείνοι δεν είχαν αυτοκίνητα. Βασίζονταν μόνο στα πόδια τους.


Aπό την Πηγή προς τις Ράχες

Έτσι πηγαίνουμε μέχρι να συναντήσουμε το χωριό «Λαψαχάδες» στις Ράχες. Από εκεί και μετά η διαδρομή ακολουθεί για πολλή ώρα έναν αγροτικό χωματόδρομο. Θα μας βγάλει στις παρυφές του φαραγγιού «Μύρσωνας» απέναντι από το χωριό «Άγιος Πολύκαρπος». Ο Μύρσωνας είναι το ποτάμι που καταλήγει στη Μεσαχτή. Εδώ πια έχουμε μπει στο δίκτυο των σηματοδοτημένων διαδρομών που έχουν αποτυπωθεί στο χάρτη «Γύρος των Ραχών με τα Πόδια» (έκδοση 2005). Αν έχουμε βαρεθεί το βουνό, παίρνουμε το «Μονοπάτι του Μύρσωνα» και μετά από δυο ώρες περίπου θα κάνουμε μπάνιο στη Μεσαχτή. Αν όμως όχι, στρίβουμε αριστερά και τραβάμε για τη Μονή Ευαγγελίστριας Μουντέ. Από εκεί –είτε απ’ τον δρόμο, είτε απ’ το «μονοπάτι με τις πατούσες»- ο Χριστός Ραχών απέχει μια ώρα περίπου. Είναι το τέρμα της διαδρομής. Αν σας πήρε λιγότερο από 7 ώρες για να την κάνετε, τότε ήσαστε έμπειρος οδοιπόρος με καλή φυσική κατάσταση και αντοχή. Συγχαρητήρια!

«Μονοπάτι των δύο μοναστηριών», «Μονοπάτι των Εξορίστων» και «Μονοπάτι των Ξωτικών», ονόμασαν αυτή τη πορεία διάφοροι πεζοπόροι, ξένοι κυρίως, που για πολλά χρόνια προσπαθούσαν να ανακαλύψουν. Εδώ κι εκεί διάφοροι σωροί από πέτρες και μισοσβησμένα σημαδάκια με χρώμα μαρτυρούν αυτές τις απόπειρες. Το κίνητρο τους ήταν πολύ λογικό. Αφού ο παραλιακός δρόμος Εύδηλος- Ράχες είναι σχετικά πρόσφατο έργο, ποια ήταν η παλιά «ημιονική οδός» μέσα από τα βουνά; Από ποιο δρόμο κατέβαιναν οι μαθητές των Ραχών για να πάνε στο Γυμνάσιο στον Εύδηλο;


Στις Ράχες

Εκείνη η παλιά παραδοσιακή διαδρομή ξαναβρέθηκε κι ανοίχτηκε πάλι. Η αναζήτηση κράτησε ένα χρόνο περίπου. Άλλον ένα χρόνο κράτησε ο καθαρισμός (πριόνι, κλαδευτήρι), συν κάποιους μήνες για να γίνει η σηματοδότηση. Ίσως δεν είναι ακριβώς η «αυθεντική» παλιά διαδρομή, αφού σε πολλά σημεία πέρασαν από πάνω της δρόμοι και άλλα έκλεισαν και χάθηκαν μέσα στη βλάστηση. Έχοντας βρει διάφορα πλαϊνά μονοπάτια, έγινε ωστόσο μια αρκετά πιστή «προσομοίωση». Έχει μήκος πάνω από 15 χιλιόμετρα, όμως σε γενικές γραμμές δεν είναι δύσκολη διαδρομή. Το έδαφος είναι ομαλό χωρίς κουραστικές ανηφόρες, υπάρχουν πολλά νερά και τα δάση προσφέρουν πλούσια σκιά.

Μαζί με άλλες διαδρομές που ανοίχτηκαν πρόσφατα, η διαδρομή Εύδηλος-Ράχες θα περιλαμβάνεται στον χάρτη του αυτοχρηματοδοτούμενου οικοτουριστικού προγράμματος «Γύρος των Ραχών με τα Πόδια», το οποίο φυσικά στο εξής δεν θα λέγεται έτσι. Παρουσιάζοντας ανοιχτές, σηματοδοτημένες διαδρομές από τον Εύδηλο μέχρι το Καρκινάγρι, ο νέος χάρτης θα φέρει τον τίτλο «Οδοιπορικές Διαδρομές στη Δυτική Ικαρία».

Να ‘μαστε καλά, να τις κάνουμε όλες.

Τρελαινομαι να κανω χατηρια στον Αγγελο! Μου το στειλε και το ανεβασα. Το θελουν λεει για να το τυπωσουν στο περιοδικακι του Δημου Ευδηλου, “Ευδηλα Νεα”. Ελπιζω να μπει κι ετσι αυτη η απιστευτη δουλεια να γινει γνωστη.
Αργοτερα θα γράψω κι εγω τη δικη μου εκδοχη. Some time later I will write my own version of this hiking route in English. I will let free myself to be very personal -wildly subjective, utterly mad! This unbelievable hike calls for such attitude. After all it was me who discovered it!

Να πάρουμε το γάδαρο και τσιμέντα και να πάμε να φτιάξουμε μία; Κάπου θα έχει μια “λιβάδα” σε κάποιο ποταμό να τη φράξουμε και να τη κάνουμε “πισίνα”. Όπως έκαναν τότε οι εθελοντές του Βριλησσού στη Χάλαρη, nοn?

Τίποτα δεν απειλείται απειλή, εκτός από την αλόγιστή μας επιθυμία για “ωραία θέα”. Το χρέος μας στις επόμενες γεννιές είναι να διατηρήσουμε την βιωσιμότητα του πλανητάκου μας, όπως την βρήκαμε, παραδίδοντας τους ακριβώς την ίδια. Αν μπορούμε να το κάνουμε χωρίς πυλώνες στα βουνά:, εντάξει. Ας αναλογισθούμε όμως τις ευθύνες μας σ’αυτές ή ας τις αγνοήσουμε…για να έχουμε ωραία θέα. Ντροπή μας.

Η ανάγκη ανανεώσιμων πηγών ενέργιας αντιτίθεται στην προστασία του περιβάλλοντος (όπως συμβαίνει και με τα ορυκτά καύσιμα). Χρειάζεται νηφάλια δημόσια συζήτηση για να βρεθεί ο συμβιβασμός.

Things seem to fall in place somehow. Don’t they? I’d like to meet Mr. Sfakiotakis. I am feeling better about Greece already. I had thought that this thing “I sit on my balcony and I drink my frape coffee and I enjoy the view. Let the world come to an end. I’ll enjoy it from here” was something like a law or ancient old custom that nobody in Greece put to doubt. But they DO PUT IT TO DOUBT – WoW – wonderful! There is future in the land I’m going to move soon to.

Tελευταία ενημέρωση για το θέμα:
Από το ένα άκρο (πετρέλαιο, πετρέλαιο, πετρέλαιο), μας πήγαν στο άλλο (πολυάριθμες γιγάντιες ανεμογεννήτριες με παραγωγή 100άδων μεγαβάτ), έγινε το απίστευτο μπάχαλο και κατατρόμαξε ο κόσμος και ξαναγυρίσαμε εκεί που ήμαστε στην αρχή. Πάντως τα μεγαλεπήβολα σχέδια για τις ανεμογεννήτριες καταβαραθρώθηκαν. Λέτε να μην ήταν το γνωστό οικείο μπάχαλο αλλά προβοκάτσια; (λέω ‘γω)

Αυτή η λογοκρισία στο προηγούμενο entry με τσάκισε. Φαίνεται όμως πως δεν έχουν πρόβλημα με τις φωτογραφίες. Ορίστε, να μία. Είναι ένα κουλό σύνθημα γραμμένο σε βράχο στο βάθος μέσα στο φαράγγι της Χάλαρης. Οι πολλοί καπιταλιστές που περνούν από εκεί στο δρόμο για τις βρωμοδουλειές τους, σίγουρα το βλέπουν και τρέμουν. Θα λένε από μέσα τους, “Άντε να τελειώνουμε με την εκμετάλλευση και τη παγκοσμιοποίηση, γιατί αν αργήσουμε, την έχουμε βάψει“.

Το έχω δει κι εγώ αυτό το σύνθημα και θαύμασα το θάρρος αυτών που το έγραψαν σε τόσο πολυσύχναστο μέρος με τόσες κάμερες κι αστυνομία τριγύρω.

Παρολες “τις καμερες και τις αστυνομιες” (χα χα), εγω λουστηκα πολλες φορες στην ωραια αγγελολιβαδα που υπαρχει πισω απο το βραχο. Το συνθημα με ενοχλησε στο βαθμο που ηθελε να δειξει οτι το μερος “ανηκε” σε κάποιον -στη προκιμενη περιπτωση δηλ. στους αντικαπιταλιστες, αντιεξουσιαστες η οτι ειναι τελος παντων. Για μενα ηταν *tribal mark* και το διαβασα σαν *this place belongs to…*, *such and such have been here…* : γνωστες ανωριμοτητες
(τα ‘χω περασει κι εγω -μη βγαζω την ουρα μου απ’ εξω)
Ωστοσο απο σκουπιδια, ουτε ιχνος! Αρα υπαρχει ελπιδα. Οταν τους περασει το smash capitalism πραγμα, να γινουν ενταξει, να μαθουν 2-3 αλλα πραγματα και τελικα να το προστατεψουν αυτο το μερος. Νομιζω ετσι θα γινει. Η μηπως γινεται ηδη;

So, with votes 9/1 the jury (composed of my friends) has decided that I shall be deported “ad isolam”(=to an island). Thank you, jury! Being grateful for your humane decision, let me hang on the walls of my blog this funny, shiny and full of summer warmth picture. I fished it out of the endless resources of the “hikingIkaria” group. It’s a photo by Christos Malachias taken many years ago in Trapalou, a cove in the southwest of Ikaria, the island where one day I will live as a grateful self-deportee.

-It was me the member of the jury who voted for solution 4. I don’t want Stavros to take the sea nomore. Lovers should stay together all the time! And a baby boy (today more than ever) needs a father always around. I’m in for a small fishing or sailing boat, though. Men need this distraction. And I love sunbathing on a nice wooden deck.

Τι υπέροχη ‘ποινή’ σου επιβάλαμε! Θα χαίρονται τα κόκαλα της γιαγιάς σου! Έκανα αίτηση στο δικαστήριο και θα με ονομάσουν ‘δεσμοφύλακα’ σου! Φυσικά και θα κάνω κάθε δυνατή κατάχρηση της εξουσίας μου…
