. . Please forgive my ignorance if I made one or two mistakes in giving the sanskit names of the different yoga postures. I thought the terms of that magical old language connect well to the original spiritual meaning of the exercises. The title of the entry is a tribute to the unforgettable «These Mountains Are For Dancing», a brilliant performance on the mountains of Ikaria by OPS Ikarias in 2014.

    Quoting from Yoga Journal about yoga in nature:

    «Being outside can intensify the yoga experience in many ways, since nature inspires all the things you try to drive home with students—focusing awareness, breathing deeply, practicing stillness. First, though, you have to get students to think more in terms of embracing rather than battling the elements. It can help to remind them that a breeze can deepen your breathing, the warm sun can deepen poses by making muscles more pliable, and a ladybug can invite you to focus on something small and still.

    Many aspects of yoga are in fact about being in the moment and at one with nature or the universe.     And for us, farmgirls, when we want to relax I think it’s much better to do a simple streching posture than sit in the shade and smoke cigarettes!

    That’s an amazing selection of pictures, Eleni! (You are not leaving Flickr for instagram, are you?) 😉
    How do you know all those impossible yoga terms? The only yoga thing I can do is a little breathwork and I used to be able to chant something. But, when in nature, I appreciate very much to see the human figures taking these shapes inside a strong, meaningful landscape. Ikaria is an island of peace and it’s peace and power of will that these shapes bring about to my mind and soothen my soul. Perhaps some day I will follow Theodorichos’ steps and sit on a mountain top like an old yogi…
