_Blog Review Ikaria 2014 # 11 The Explorers (2a)_

Closed to the outside, open to the inside

Nana to agrimi's blog Γεια σας.

Enjoy!

Worse than Wild Fire

The Athenians are depressed and angry and bitter about the loss of so many trees on Mt. Parnitha. Take comfort ’cause there is something much worse than wild fires. And that’s the loss of the earth itself!!! Take a look at
THE DEATH OF A FOREST, A RIVER, A MOUNTAIN

I’m just wondering why my friend «peppeta» added it in his *favs*. Is it because it reminded him of his fellow countryman Antonioni’s film «Zabriski Point»?
(those who don’t know, type «Zabriski+point» in Google images)
Because something that’s utterly bad can turn into good.

Somebody like it naked
Even if I love Antonioni, I added it in my favs becouse I love dry, naked, mediterranean landscapes. This place remind me of my thirsty land. Puglia too can be so dry. Desert is coming and this beautiful shot is screaming it loud. And, last but not least, there’s too much eros in my favs, I need some tanatos to balance it.

(me too likes it naked but not too dry ’cause it hurts -aooch!)
I doubt you have so many mad starved and thirsty goats in Puglia or Bari and the rest of the coastal towns would be flooded or gone thirsty to extinction. Goats should not be subsided by the E.U. On the contrary they should be totaly banned. It was a good idea some 7000 y. ago but not anymore. The same is for hunting etc.
I’m not going to have children in some kind of «our-own-Ethiopia» and loose them in a land and rock avalanche afterwards.

What’s that about having children?
That sounds like a good idea – I’m sure they would grow up to be ‘The Man / Woman who Planted Trees’.

‘El’ : I’m sure the E.U. bureaucrats have no idea. They should be sent tons of photos like this. Brave of you to have posted it. The worst disasters happen gradually and silently and in places hardly anybody visits or takes notice.

‘simon’ : are you speaking of the famous ‘cartoon’ film with the man who planted oak nuts? Or about that modern German artist who did the same for real and as art? Or the cartoon is inspired from that artist? Do you know?

I have a very slim volume called ‘L’homme qui plantait des arbres’ by Jean Giono, first published in 1953, about a man who planted acorns…

-> Jean Giorno’s is the script of the cartoon, actually a 10′ b&w classic masterpiece.
-> «the German artist» was Joseph Beuys. Not just «a German artist». Buys was BIG in Conceptual Arts universally. See www.tkffdn.org/partner/beuys/partners.shtml
and
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Beuys.
The particular artwork is «7,000 Oaks for Documenta 7»

NOTE: Beuys was a Stuka plane pilot during the war. Doesn’t this photo remind of craters from bombs?

I am contemplating some kind of drama…

I saw «The Man Who Planted…» on TV ages ago. My son who was 6 then, was very excited. If I remember well, it’s based on a true story from before the war. There is a similar story about a woman who planted oaks in Ikaria. They called her ‘Lunny’ Maria Sarantaina.

simonsterg Pro User says:

I think «The Man Who Planted…» is fiction, but you do hear of people that have in fact done it for real. I’m glad Ikaria has one! Are there trees there still? Or is the story vague? Or have the goats got there??
Posted 3 months ago.

view profile

isl_gr Pro User says:

The story of Lolo-Maria Sarantaina is clear and true. I think that many of her oaklings died because there was war and famine and she had no strength to climb the mountains to water them. She was believed to be mad in her time but now they have raised a small stele in her memory.

*** btw, did you know that there is a league of jet pilots who plant trees because they feel bad about the greenhouse gases caused by jet flights?

@ ‘Leo’ : maybe you are right; but for me who travel a lot because of my work and family, I am used to these extremities. In case you are right, let’s see this as an extra motivation for us to eliminate the wrongs in the environment and in our socities.

‘vRiLiSoS’ Nature Loving Society work paths

____

____

On the 26th August the Mad Outdoor Brigade are coming to do volunteer work in Ikaria again! I missed them last year; I’ll miss them this year too. But if YOU are in Ikaria from 26 Aug. to 3 Sept. YOU don’t miss them. Drop by and say hello to them. The same as last year they will camp in the public hall of the church Profitis Elias in Karidies village, Rahes.

They are not coming for charity or even less to «colonize» or connect or show off. They do it for themselves and nobody should be obliged. They are tired from doing trips and «consuming» places. It’s very significant for them to «leave a mark». Mountaineers are very sensitive at that. In this case «the mark» is the paths.

Looks like fun. Wish I could have helped.

Elle, hope all is good with you. Thinking about you, sending positive energy your way…

Monday August 28, 2006 – 07:59am (PDT)

I’m not good with my hands but I’m great with team work esp. outdoors. I get inspired and talk so much that people loose their minds and forget if they are tired or not.
Thank you dear ‘greg’. I feel fine. I also feel the positive energy coming. I’m rather concentrated in myself these days. So I don’t communicate much. I just work and watch around (+watch my waist -used to be very proud of-disappear completely -lol)

Monday August 28, 2006 – 09:35am (PDT)

I hope there will be the right kind of people in the «mad brigade» this year. Viva Volunteerism, direct approach and small enterprise! Down with —big projects— !!!

Ζeppelin «IKARIA» with many propellers & forested with Oaks

I don’t want another stupid war for oil
and
I don’t want nuclear plants around the Aegean
and
I don’t want oil tanker and gas pipeline games
and
I don’t want climate change.
Yes, it’s true that I want my computer and my refridgerator to work all the time while I am in Ikaria so that I’m able to work and live a normal life.
but
on the other hand, though I like wind turbines,
fog on Atheras in Ikaria
I don’t Ikaria to become a large aeolian factory!

No, I am NOT giving my beloved wild mountain ridge to crazy capitalist profiteers profit who will flatten it with roads and building sites and turn it into a desert of rubble and gravel threatening to slide down on our heads.
I had always wished my island to belong to a larger network of something. I never wanted it to be *an isolated primitive paradise*. Oh, no !

I want everybody to be able to enjoy the benefits of electricity. But if this is going to destroy our lives, we’d better go back to oil lamps!

.

I could accept five or seven or even twelve towers, but I say a big NO to 110 wind turbines on mt Atheras!
NEVER!!! NEVER!!! NEVER!!!

But in the worse case, if those profiteers and prospectors actually come and we are unable to stop them because we are small and few, it’s ok, let them make a mess of the mountain -the source of our life. Let them have a big party on it’s back and break its bones… ‘Cause I know it’ll all be a cheat deal and half of their turbines will fall down
(like in the final scene of Kakogiannis’ film «Zorba the Greek» -remember?).
What ever it is, let them try it!..
When the party is over, me and my children and my friends (and others we will make on the way) …

…. we will camp under the wrecks of those gigantic power towers and ….

my forested airship Ikaria

*PLANT 100.000 OAK ACORNS* !
See you there whenever…

In May the fog in the Aegean is PURPLE !

Ikaria ridge fog-1

Last weekend a group of 40 mountaineers from Athens came in Ikaria and walked on the mountain range from one side of the island to the other. I intended to meet them or rather find them somewhere along their way to «spy» on them.

Ikaria ridge fog-2

That is, to follow them from a distance just to enjoy the sight. «People in Landscape» : a theme that I have an obsession with.

Ikaria ridge fog-6

I also wanted to make them wonder of who I’d be, if they saw me. A shepherdess, a hunteress?  A hiker who follows a better path than theirs? Add up some mystery…  Image he he
But the weekend was very foggy. Mist covered the mountains, so I assumed that they wouldn’t do it and got back Imagein bed.

Nana skinnydipped in the foggy pool

I had done the same mistake : I underestimated the Greeks.

Ikaria ridge fog-6

Not only had they walked the whole Image length of the mountain ATHERAS (including some very dangerous passages) in the fog but they also took a dip in a lake with air temperatures 16-20 degrees). On the next day they walked in the canyon of Chalares, they swam in the river pools and then in the beach of Nas.

«People in Landscape». I know this is very important. I can’t explain why right now. Until I do better, see in the map what they did…

so that was you plan; «spy» on people like «the madwoman of the mountains of Ikaria, eh? Red hair would be seen from very far away even in the mist.
Anyway, they were travelling very fast. Too fast for me and far too fast for you. They wouldn’t stop and talk, talk, talk and have smokes and take pictures.
It’s difficult for the Greeks to wake up in the morning, pack and get on the move, but once they do —

Friday May 5, 2006 – 11:16pm (EEST)

-> once upon a time short-legged restless Greeks (armours, shields e.t.c.) walked all the way to India and back.
-> in fact the color of the fog in the Aegean is *salmon*. You can’t see a thing but it’s not scary. Because of this colour you feel ok; good vibrations… In it you sense that the sun reigns somewhere over the clouds.
It was very different during the blizzard on Ikaria in winter, though. Oh yes, it was, man.

Sunday May 7, 2006 – 10:46am (PDT)

never seen fog the color of salmon

Sunday May 7, 2006 – 06:10pm (PDT)

ha – I assumed that you were going to react with a comment _:
By «salmon» I translated the french «saumon» which is light greyish purple colour with a touch of yellow in it _: but the flesh of a fresh salmon fish is brighter and more to the orange, isn’t it?

Monday May 8, 2006 – 01:34am (PDT)

Yep, varies between pale orange and crimson, although we also have races of chinook salmon that are white-fleshed, we call them «white kings,» very rich and highly prized by those who know about them.

These Greeks, they are through-hikers, yes? Bully for them. And you, you are a woman of the misty mountains to a certain extent…

Monday May 8, 2006 – 08:19am (PDT)

I’m writing very fast and short right from THE island (…no horizon … just the blue). We arrived this morning. Eleni and I are going to smash it ! She is leaving, you know… So we’ve taken an oath to avoid the beaches. So it will be anything else but the beaches. My bf will very useful to break branches, hold us and drag us over boulders, make sure to show everybody that we are «accompanied». There will be no photos from these adventures. We are too big stars, super bums !

Goodnight
(so ‘un-ikarian’ -lol- we go to bed early…)

Modeling for nature

.
Nefertari & Isis
.
.
I’m not goddess Isis, Venus, or St. Mary to appear miraculously in the waters or the skies. Even as a weak human, even if I was Laeticia Casta, I don’t think I’d be able to save a square cm of the planet. On the contrary, I think that if I tried, they’d soon build a highway across ‘paradise’ and caravans of pilgrims would arrive to visit ‘the site of the miracle’ in toyotas, suzukis and mercedeses. They’d profane, destroy and pollute it.
.
.
Snake Goddess 1600 BC
.

.

However… the ‘stupid side of me’ is optimistic. Paradise is inside us. In the same way a giraffe adds value to an African lanscape, a man or a woman adds value to our own natural habitat. Because we are a part of the fauna the same as a heron or a porkupine. But visual arts have to go a long way until they show us something like this. Let’s start with the kind request that both artists and models park their vehicles as far as possible from ‘the habitats’.

We’d never have taken this photo in the first place, if we hadn’t walked there a long hour on foot and we hadn’t been in the same mood as the model.

P.S. when you see me writing in ‘courrier’ (fonts like a typewriter’s), you know this is scrap: thoughts that come about and drop in random here and there. This scrap is very important for me. I’m just a little bit worried that it doesn’t sometimes make sense…

Here is another for you «eco-freak» 🙂

Return to the Golden Age
We are like salmon, swimming back upstream:
leaping against waterfalls that thwart,
cut and bruised; but strong; our only dream
return to source; no thought save source of thought;

and in that fight, our iron age turns to bronze,
and we to heroes, in a war of soul,
as nature seeks the nature it had once;
though wholly lost, remembering the whole.

We silver salmon, sparkling as the sun
shines on our fierce and loving enterprise:
to rear our children where the world is one;
the source remembered, nature’s greatest prize.

The golden age is ageless in its gleam
and we, like salmon, swimming back upstream.

Michael Shepherd

Plato said the same (except for the salmon) in prose. So cheer up ‘eco-freak’. There is light in the garbidge.

-thank you very much for the poem. It counts. You are ‘a cause’ (or ‘case’ -some say ‘lost’). But …’loosers win all’ You ‘ve just won 5 points. Though surely you don’t need them; the redhaired girl with the long tress (did you think she passed unoticed?) in your Flickr photos is 100 t prettier than me and 100 t closer.

‘light in the garbidge’ : I take it as a Platonic metaphor. Because in the real world the light in the garbidge is garbidge on fire polluting and giving out dioxines.
-I’m an ex-ecofreak, currently a respectable woman with career & an expensive new hair style.

«the rain in Ikariain falls mainly on the mountains»

.

Ikaria After the storm 1

BAD: the electric network is old and very badly maintained, so lightnings
cause many blackouts.

Ikaria After the storm 2

GOOD: the lightnings show superwow in a blackouted landscape at night.

rhomphaia

SO-SO: I tried to take a picture of a lightning and of course I failed. I mean, it didn’t come up as good as I expected. I also captured the rain on the trees and the strange light in the sky.

P.S. I may catch pneumonia with these acrobatics one day. I will not be my fault. It will be yours, oh my readers ! Start collecting money for my hospitalization…
