Here it is. We have decided with Nana not to say «nature» again. We have agreed that «nature» is an urban legend! We will only allow ourselves the use of the adjective «natural» in such cases as to make a difference with «artificial».
We are also thinking of deconstructing the term «environment» as well. We will see. More about it later on.

In this we will walk together, holding hands, pressing tightly on our sides. I’ll take your warmth. You will take my strength. We will make it through to wherever…Saturday September 15, 2007 – 09:33pm (EEST)

In return here is a small part of the story. This trail was almost an imaginary one, featuring only in an old Italian map of 1943 and in Elenis imagination and *unusual sources* (her old neigbours’ tales). The distance was about 2,5 km cutting through deep tall makia. We started cittung from both sides, one day from the east and the other from the west, with no more sense of direction but the zig-zag flow of a rivulet running next to the alleged path. The hard evidence whether the path existed, as well as my extreme worry was if the two tunnels would eventually meet someplace. They DID! I felt like opening a champaigne bottle.

That bit about the 1943 italian map sounds sort of romantic § – a hint from an odd old source – ideally you should have lost the map – kind of like a Borges tale, you know the sort of thing…
And you have made this perhaps imaginary path into… a REAL ONE – a Second Eupalinos! ¤ Champagne corks ought to be flying!
footnotes:
§ not that Eleni’s imagination isn’t also, of course, romantic – and the *unusual sources* very likely accurate…

¤ if that’s hyperbole it’s just in a celebratory way – not an attempt at irony (which I dislike)

angeloska Pro User says:

I lost the map! As soon as I found it I lost it! I had only one glimpse of it. Then a veil of secrecy came and covered …
Eupalinos? I had thought of him. He used stereometry and trigonometry. He was given an awful amount of money too. But Eleni’s way is the low-budget one: trust your senses.

view profile

isl_gr Pro User says:

(Nana says:) Maybe this is a stupid question, but why did you start cutting one day from the east, one day from the west? Why haven’t you done it one way only? And avoid the risk of the two tunnels not meeting?

view profile

angeloska Pro User says:

(love to talk technicalities with you, *thorn-walker*)
I have many reasons to cut from both sides :

1st) I usually hit the paths from as many sides as I can. Although people know more or less about my business, they still may get suspicious if they see me driving too often and stopping long in a desert place. So I sometimes take a path from one end and sometimes from another. It looks more normal if I am seen going someplace once or twice a fortnight instead of once a week.

2nd) This particular path was looong! When we got into the thick, deep and dark, at a certain point I lost my self-confidence. (That’s about when Eleni wrote in that last message of hers in the hiking group that I should not give up the chainsaw.) So we drove a long way round and started cutting from another place: a glade with a stony ground where the path was easy to see. Conveniently, this place was not far from a road, so we didn’t have to walk long to get back from work.

3rd) Regardless of the above, it really had to be done from both sides. With the Komatsu (*good machine* -lol:) I could have butchered through the maquis on a straight line and created a way through. But I don’t make way-throughs; I make paths. And I’m always tryng to find the original ones. Because my walks are inside nature and history as well. When the two ends connected (so to say, automatically), I was sure that I hadn’t just made an opening through. That was an ancient path used by the elvish old inhabitants of Ikaria.
…………………………………………
§ § § §
And because I have explained so thoroughly, here is question for you:
I have a permission from the Forest Service to open the paths. In fact, more than permission, it is an encouragement based on the general principle that there should be paths in the forests. They serve as fire zones, they say, and this is correct. Yet for most people this means that firemen are able to unreel their hoses and put out a fire in the heart of the forest. But there is also another reason why a path like this is a fire-zone.It prevents fires. Why, Nan? You are still a good mechanic, aren’t you?

Here I go…
(We are between friends, are not we? Nobody is bothered. Hope so.)
(Γειά σου Κωνσταντίνε!)
______________________________________________________________

An archaic forest as this, is an alive organic and very complicated system : : a *good machine* which (to work well) needs a temperature control system. In spring when temperatures rise considerably in Greece, there is still water, the system is watercooled. Afterwards in summer, when there is little water but there are cool winds from the sea, the system shifts to air-cooled (like some car engines fit for both normal and desert conditions).
______________________________________________________________
So, your tunnel *αγγελούκο* helps in the air-cooling, lowers the temperature of the organism and therefore prevents fires. Your tunnel is an air-duct; functions like the pipe of a ventillator. Είναι ένας αεραγωγός. Brings from the sea and spreads through the cool breeze inside the forest and (w/o entering into a lot of technical details) this makes a big difference.
_______________________________________________________________
Because I have a feeling that you are kinda sorry for the chopping off all these tree branches, just think that what you did with the mini-Komatsu, was being done in the past by the ancient animals, like the deer (dama-dama), the wild goat (capra aegagrus) and the wild pig (sus scrofa). They made scars in the forest for the good of the forest. Now, unlike the animal’s, your scar is straight; ok, never mind; let’s put the blame on gaddem Euclides!
________________________________________________________________

What’s the orientation of the tunnel? N to S? NE to SW?

simonsterg Pro User says:

Wow!! It’s so sexy when it gets technical!
How ’bout a graph to spice it up even more… (never mind that it’s from across the sea on Kerkis.) Do you see? «overheating in the cushion» – HOT STUFF! – someone should make a (straight line) path through that thing!
(incidentally, I see Tilos has it’s very own Astragalus on flickr – but I can’t locate any photo with the tags astragalus and ikaria. – it must be just that I’m not searching properly…) 😉

I lost MY map somewhere in there last year! In fact three maps I had specially copied and enlarged in Manchester; such was my struggle to hack a way through to PIGI, they fell from my pack.

Here’s another reason for the path to be cut from both ends – so that the people living at either end both feel they have a new path that TAKES them somewhere and don’t see it as an invasion from the outside world.

view profile

angeloska Pro User says:

For years hikers who stayed in Evdilos and Kampos on the coast (point A) and saw the mountains of Rahes (point C) on the west, were asking for a direct way to make it up there without having to walk on the coastal road as far as Armenistis (point B) and from there climb to Rahes (point C). At a certain point I realized that what they were asking to follow was a cut-trough on the ypotenuse of the right triangle (A-C). I like ypotenuses. They are good options to a square static world. And indeed these are the ways invaders follow.
(But of course to make a succesfull invasion, I needed an invitation and a promise for an orgy on plenty of fried good Ikarian potatoes from Perameria.)

The potatoes were delicious and all and so was the company but… on the next day I met Lefteris (the boy with the chainsaw in my Flickr photos) who had walked the trail and he told me that it needs a lot more work. Who is going to do it? Am I chasing a chimera?p.s. should I declare it a «nude hiking trail» ? <tease>

Let me stop here. Let me, too, look at nature awhile.

The brilliant blue of the morning sea, of the cloudless sky,

the shore yellow; all lovely,

all bathed in light

Let me stand here. And let me pretend I see all this

(I actually did see it for a minute when I first stopped)

and not my usual day-dreams here too,

my memories, those sensual images.

Constantine P. Cavafy

I didn’t connect to Kavafis the other evening, but I should have picked it up from your comment El. Anyway, I found a translation….perhaps not an accurate one, but it still fits your picture perfectly.

@ simonsterg : I tell you the islands are like a mountain range sunk. Didi you know? They say that the caves of the prehistoric man are now under the sea.
@ trag : it’s because your land base is in Armenistis and this is a ‘bye-bye’ picture as ‘mountain ash’ pointed out.
@cheeseontaoist : can’t beat a Lomo ! I just found myself in the right spot the right time.
@ angeloska : 1) sure have a sure foot ! What would I be doing in Ikaria if I didn’t… 2) And I’d call Seferis «fat moody guy», ok? What’s your problem?
@ mountain ash : This is one of my most very best poems ever. Kavafis was a 100% urban poet. This is the only verses he wrote about nature, that it was like a vision to him and still the most real even if it lasted for a few secs. (the translation is somehow ‘puritan’ -there should be a better one)
@ everybody : THANKS A LOT

I *really discovered nature* an early morning long ago as I was out and escaping from a lover’s bed who I had idealized too much.

I like to think that *sweet gay guy* had probably found himself in the same situation with a boyfriend down in Alexandria in the 1910s. He left the room and *wow* what did he see? dawn in the gulf of Alexandria !

In a Dilemma

Stavros () is a merchant mariner. He’s been seafaring in the oceans for years and he earns quite a lot of money. Then, now, all of sudden, a shipping agent offers him a job in a small cargo that sails round the coasts of Greece in the Ionian and the Aegean seas. His salary will be much less and he will probably have to say goodbye to his career, but he will be in Greece! In this case, however, I wouldn’t be able to stop working (as I was planning to do some day), because the money he is going to earn, will not be enough for the three of us. It’s not that I mind work, on the contrary; but my work involves a lot of traveling. Therefore, if Stavros accepts the offer, he will stay in Greece, but I will not be there!

What do we do?

1) Stavros moves to Greece and takes the small coaster cargo; I (must) go on working and traveling. Our baby is brought up by his parents. In this case I will miss my baby and I will miss Stavros too. Moreover I will be very jealous of him sailing around the Greek islands without me. I will also miss Greece (though I’m used to this -more or less).

2) Stavros goes seafaring as before; I stop working travels and I live on his money in Greece. I become a good “sailor’s wife”. In this case I will miss Stavros and I will miss my job and my independence.

3) Stavros goes seafaring as before; I work and travel as before. Our baby is brought up by his parents. I will miss my baby, I will miss Stavros, I will miss Greece –everything! But we will be both independent -two very mature individuals.

4) Both of us give up our work and we decide to stay together forever. We will miss our jobs. We will also miss the money.

5) Stavros takes the small coaster. I give up my work –the traveling part. We live on much less money. Maybe I set a household in Ikaria. I will miss Stavros –but not much. I will miss the traveling –but not much. About my job we have the internet but I will miss the thrill –the action in real time. Maybe not much?

What do we do?

Solution 1: 2 misses + 0,5 (for jealousy) + 0,2 (for missing Greece) = 2,7
Solution 2: 2 misses + 0,5 (loss of independence) = 2, 5
Solution 3: 3 misses = 3
Solution 4: 2 misses (x 2) = 4
Solution 5: 3 x 0,5 misses = 1,5 + 0,5 (for various small misses) = 2

The answer is Solution 5

Friday May 4, 2007 – 10:26am (EEST)

I wish we could reduce our choices to maths like that! Five it is then…
(As a foreigner in France, I know how insoluble these things can be… you of course should pay no attention to us!)
🙂

Friday May 4, 2007 – 12:43pm (CEST)

yes, it’s a stupid rough cut nonsense and Nana was right to point it out with her calculations. It’s typical of her: wild sarcastic irony. Life doesn’t work like this. Yet, putting everything down, helps a lot. And it makes a story too.
Solution 5 is obviously the best, though it will mean a completely DIFFERENT WAY OF LIFE. But we must change. Thus his majesty Sultan Sideris (our baby) decreted…

Friday May 4, 2007 – 01:12pm (PDT)

Changes aren’t permanent Eleni. If number 5 feels right now, then go with it. It can be reviewed in a couple of years when his majesty has grown a little.

PS It is Rowan’s 2nd birthday today – already it has all changed so much since she was Sideris’s age and although my horizon’s haven’t broadened in reality, I feel that in theory they could do so more easily.
Set up a house on Ikaria – it would be a wonderful thing for Sideris. I will be very jealous though, as I would love to do the same with Rowan!

Friday May 4, 2007 – 10:59pm (BST)

Ikaria is more than enough a thrill for you. You have proved it to the world with this blog! And we wouldn’t mind one more «good sailor’s wife» over here. So I voted for sol. # 5. A question put is a question solved.

Thank you friends! The desicion (nr. 5) is almost 1/2-taken and growning (3/5s, 4/5s and on). I just wanted to see how it sounds. Both Stavros and I have been succesful in our careers and we have struggled since very young for that. But now that safety and money is near, Stavros is afraid that though maybe a captain, he may soon become alcoholic. And me, though maybe soon a TV producer, I’ll get in cocaine!.. It’s just how the story goes.
(I don’t mention Sideraki. When we are happy he is happy, might this be on the moon -:))
So i will settle in Ikaria. (I can’t believe i’m writing this -thank you) and maybe I will stageset RPGs like: imagine you are the wicked weasel and I am a wicked chicken… bla bla.

Τι να κάνουμε;

WHY IKARIA? An interview with Eleni.

In Ikaria I went to be by myself, in the sense that I wanted to keep away
from the human hubbub and the noise. For me it is the island of controlled
loneliness. I went there to lay off, but also to work on a script.
There are open horizons all around. They can widen the imagination.
Over and above the place is located absolutely on the perimeter of
developements, without however being ever outside. It's in orbit
like a satelite and this is a very good seat for somebody like me
whose job is to generate ideas.

(This is Nana. The following interview is sure to debunk those who want to believe Ikaria as a soporiferous island. That’s all I had to say in place of an introduction. I should also say that I did a lot of mending to improve the word order so that the whole thing made sense. I mention this in case somebody thought we talk like that when we are between us…)

Yaaa…

– Ya sou.

After two years of hard work abroad, you spent an entire winter and spring in Ikaria. Why?

– In Ikaria I went to be by myself, in the sense that I wanted to keep away from the human hubbub and the noise. For me it is the island of controlled loneliness. I went there to lay off, but also to work on a script. There are open horizons all around. They can widen the imagination. Over and above the place is located absolutely on the perimeter of developements, without however being ever outside. It’s in orbit like a satelite and this is a very good seat for somebody like me whose job is to generate ideas. This, I mean the generating of ideas, by the way, is like a national sport for the locals. Everybody have various opinions on everything. There is a philosophical consideration of the reality, a continuous searching. That was good but at the same time it took all my self-discipline so that I was able to finish my work without being drawn away into this game; neither drift into the dramatic landscape nor be sucked up by the notorious slow times which the landscape imposes. When I was through with the work, ok then I let myself drift and be sucked up for a while.

So you used the island as a base, but you didn’t want to be sucked up?

– It’s precisely as you say. In order not to mingle and interfere with my work, whatever I saw and thought about Ikaria I wrote in my blog or I said it with photos in Flickr. Again a lot of discipline was needed; and I confess that I messed up quite a few times; thought of letting everything drop and become an Ikarian hippie. Fortunately I love my job and the friends I have there and the money that come from my work and provide for my independence; so I always brought myself back to order.

How much can you reveal here about the script?

– It’s nothing too original. It has to do with the way the general policies, ideas and popular trends affect a small insignificant place. About how these trends are digested, distorted or even, you may say, come up better. How they are «materialized» as a technocrat would say. At the same time the opposite can happen as well and there lies the juice of the story: how a small insignificant place can affect in its turn, if not the central events, at least a few, very few people of which some may be important in their own special way and prove able to affect the central events.

Is it about the 17N?

– No, no … (roaring laughter) …

Yet it has to do with Ikaria?

– There is a distant relation. My favourite island helped to inspire, that was all. The story takes place in another location which I thought was very alike. It’s not an island, though. After so much travelling I am pleased to say that there are many Ikarias in the world and many of them are in Europe, although we do not usually consider our continent as contradictory and exotic… (laughter) You may find an Ikaria, for instance, in some remote provinces, in valleys between mountains, or even in some uptown urban quarters -that’s not uncommon in mid-eastern Europe.

The year before last you walked the entire part of the E4 trail from Hungary to Greece. In this particular route how many Ikarias did you encounter?

– A lot. You can’t imagine how many. The only difference with the Ikaria we know, is that’s it’s an island, not metaphorically but actually. There are very strict geographical limits and that’s easier to take and more productive as far as the concept is concerned. On the other hand these limits are too restricted; the concept would be clear but the story would be limited. It might come out as a description of customs and folklore and I wanted to avoid this. Yet… look, I might not have written a script with a setting in Ikaria, however, after I finished the script, as an adjacent return from all those long hikes in the mountains and the ravines I turned up with a few nice fairy-tales.

Is it what you said already? I mean that you eventually let yourself get sucked up?

– I have always liked to invent and tell stories. Having all the time and space at my disposal in Ikaria for the first time I let myself set my strories on stage and I tried them with myself as an actor as well. So In the natural settings of the island I pretended to be «The Doe» and the «Fair Maid Sang» from two Greek folk songs that I adore; I improvised Ophelia of Shakespeare, «The Maid of the Castle» (that’s from Ikaria); and from the modern figures I acted the «grouvalina» in Chalares river – (laughter)

Why not play «the good terrorist» too?

– Whatever but not such fantasies, dear! Nor a nun or a missionary either, roles that sound to me very close to what you ‘ve just said. They get me down; not to tell you they dispair me. I reject anybody who prays for me or shoots a gun for me or in my name in order to save me without asking me.

How about an ecologist then?

– Yes, but only for me, not for the others. Yet why should I have acted this part? What else was I but an «ecologist» in the way I behaved in Ikaria? With my organic potato garden and my endless hikes in the hills, the herbs I collected and so on, what was I but an ecologist? But don’t you think this term has degenerated to mean almost nothing? Half of the Ikarian women I know, are «ecologists». It’s not a part for a fairy-tale. It’s a real attitude in life.

Did you also act Icarus?

– No. To begin with he was a man and secondly because the story has a bad end. From winged beings I played «Serafina», a female angel of my own invention … (laughter …pause)

Are you going to do something with these stories set in Ikaria? Professionaly, I mean.

– The island is very convenient for such RPG situations. First of all nobody gets you wrong as long as you don’t offend and disturb anybody; and then there is no strict code for a respectable lifestyle. You don’t have a problem if you appear in the supermarket in dusty clothes or dry weeds in your hair. I can tell you that they may take it like an honour…

As evidence that you had «friction» with the nature of the island? (laughter)

– Yes, as long as you are not like that all the time. This would be disrespect and «grouvalization». I, for instance, more than once have appeared sweat-soaked and in rags and the next time I showed up all clean and with my hair well-made in a nice and neat afternoon clothes set… (laughter)

That’s a useful tip for some people to know. Anyway, let’s get back to my question.

– I admit that I slipped off your question on purpose. These stories are my own personal, private things. I may narrate them verbally; I may give ideas to others; but I won’t turn them into «work» : written narratives with scenic directions and detailled dialogues. They are my own salutary schizophrenia and I want to keep them so that I can change them once in a while according to my mood. In short, they are my girlish utopias and I won’t sell them. Or at least this what I think of the matter right now. Who knows, maybe when I am old, I change my mind. Or maybe the environment of Ikaria goes bad, or another danger comes about and in that case I may decide to be a «committed writer» and raise hell. (laughter…) But for the time being and with the baby I am unable to think of such activistic situations. My baby is enough activism for me now –

(These last sentences were said while Sideraki had started to cry. And so here the interview with Eleni was interrupted and stopped. Yaaaa-aaa… We speak again soon.)

Fascinating; my goal is to drift off into the landscape, with neither haste nor hesitation. You hiked the E4 Hungary to Greece? I offer a humble bow.

Monday January 29, 2007 – 08:50am (PST)

Drifting into the landscape? Well said. That’s Nana’s specialty to a degree extreme. Labors for hours across thornbush lands for sport. The mad Cretan bloke doesn’t need paths -:

Oh please don’ t bow about the E4. ‘Twas a smashing experience. It offered me good reason to curl up like a cat in Ikaria soon after.
Btw, there is a E4 related thread in Flickr group «hiking».

THE LAFINA

All the deers are grazing and drinking clear fresh water
All but a humble Lafina (she-deer) who doesn’t go along with the others
She is walking in the shadows, she is turning her head away
And where she finds spurting water, she stirs mud and then she drinks it.

And the Sun asked her, and the Sun is asking her
Why humble Lafina, you don’t go along with the others?
Why are you walking in the shadows, why are you turning your head away?
And why where you find spurting water, do you stir mud and then you drinks it?

Oh Sun, since it’s you who’s asking, I will confess to you
I had been without a calf for twelve years
Sterile, ny Sun, without a calf for twelve years
And after those twelve years were over, I bore a calf at last.

And when the King came out to hunt
He saw that it was well-bred, he shoots two arrows and kills it on the spot
This is why I am walking in the shadows and I am turning my head away.
This is why where I find spurting water, I stir the mud and then I drink it.

And then the Sun bleared and the mountains quivered
And the Moon extinguished on listening to the deer
And the dens and the ravines sighed with her
Cry for me, mother, cry for me with the Sun and the Moon.
