My Dear Blog ツ Summer

____

Hello!

Don’t be surprised! Family and friends said that I deserved it so…

this month’s review is dedicated to my blog!

They thought that after nine posts on other people’s great blog entries on Ikaria, it was time for me to let out a bit of ego. After all, as the Greek saying goes, «if you don’t praise your own house, it breaks down on your head».

Torso torched with love – left sideTorso torched with love – right side

So here I am claiming the tenth review. I hope you find pleasurable and constructive this random selection of entries, both newer and older, from Eleni’s blog in Ikaria. Click on the pictures to be directed to them, and if you find anything interesting, scroll down to read the comments too. The most recent ones are packed in the RSS feed.

This entry is dedicated to summer.

Original photo by gerouz

It is also dedicated to a ‘badass’ ツ who landed on her face and a while later discovered Ikaria. I heard that in some mysterious way I ‘ve put my hand in helping her get on the plane. We are looking forward to reading her impressions from her trip, and may those be beneficial to mankind. Some positive and conscientious slacking is absolutely necessary, otherwise we will very soon destroy ourselves and our planet as well.

Hello blog !
Hello world ! 😀
It’s me, Eleni. Here I am back again.

The ‘monster’ was afraid of me as much as I was afraid of the ‘monster’. The people at work did not believe that I was actually going to spend a winter in Ikaria. I showed them the photos + some I didn’t upload in Flickr. Now they are thinking of shooting a documentary about this island. This is not going to happen. I’m against the idea -for the time being at least. My island is a «BETA» island = «unfinished», «unpolished», rough. It’s just come out on the surface. It’s a new invention. (Or perhaps it’s a «GAMMA»?) Anyway, it works but it wouldn’t look good on the screen (yet).

I’ll post again about this.

Meanwhile go:

Thanks for coming back. I didn’t want to be your answering machine.
The absolute proof that you were roaming in Ikaria : your car !
The mechanic in Athens wouldn’t repair it unless I had it steam-washed all over outside and inside including the motor, wheels -everything ! He asked me if you had taken part in the Paris-Dakar race. «No», I said, «But it’s more or less the same. My friend spent three off-seasons in Ikaria».

Work now and earn the money for the repairs. I think the commonwealth or common fund or whatever of the Ikarians should contribute to buy you new tires at least. It’s amazing how many stones, rusted old nails and other metal scrap we found in the old tires.
Except the air filter which was so full of dust, the rest of the engine is in a perfect shape. The mechanic (who was ready to throw up at the looks car) said that eventually you are a good driver.

Monday May 22, 2006 – 11:00am (EEST)

An Opel is an Opel. I missed the car, though I had the time of my life travelling by train across half Europe. When you washed it, did you take care to gather some of the ‘sacred Ikarian mud’?
Why do I think you did? I really do. Are you testing it? Besides metal scrap what other ingredients will you find? We want a USDA *official report* (please) here in public.

Monday May 22, 2006 – 04:50pm (PDT)

@@@:What an idea ! Yes, Ikaria is BETA. When you see how these «unfinished» systems work, there is always a ‘dialogue’ with the members (take a survey, give us your opinion, complaints, requests e.t.c). The owners also monitor the system and see what the people actually do and what they like or tend to do. So they act accordingly. So it’s about interaction and Ikaria -yes, if you want it like that- is a very interactive BETA island.

@@@’sacred Ikarian mud’? -lol . Nostalgic, El? Already?

Tuesday May 23, 2006 – 01:11pm (EEST)

Ψ is in Ikaria, ‘doctor’ is in Ikaria, ‘ash’ is in Ikaria and they ‘interact’ with the unfinished BETA. I hate them and in the same time all my good thoughts are with them. Breathe radonium, my friends, the island’s (non-radioactive) noble gas coming out of the (so many) cracks of stones and get (not cracked or stoned), just high. I so lovingly hate you…

(p.s. glad the ‘salmon’ smiled)

Tuesday May 23, 2006 – 12:57pm (PDT)

El, you can stop hating me now. My visit was all too brief – but we (Rowan and the goat) interacted well with the Beta. I have your honey (many kisses for that) – and some local tsipouro here in England – to assist with the continuing interaction.xxx

Monday May 29, 2006 – 12:15am (BST)

I thought you were coming in August and had arranged for «spring flower honey». But you came earlier and you caught me by surprise and you got just «standard» stuff.
I don’t hate you much. Just a bit. I wish I knew what the weather is like where I am now. I would be glad even if it was raining and thundering. We live and work in a completely artificial environment. My batteries are full to burst though after an Ikarian winter.

Monday May 29, 2006 – 02:06am (PDT)

The honey is far from ‘standard stuff’- it’s lovely!Next time I come, I will bring you some heather honey from Derbyshire – that is lovely too; but you have to promise to be there, and not to be in that horrible artificial environment you are in now. You must be going crazy…..I hope the batteries are ‘long life’.

Eleni in Ikaria, February 08, 2006

.

Oh! Muse, chill out Ikarian-wise and let ME sing the furry of the waves…
———————————————————————————————

I uploaded some new pictures in Flickr yesterday. Then I found them too dull and decided to live up the scene with some motion. The weather was on my side. There was one of those terrific storms again in the sea and snow fell on the mountains.

thalassograph 9

thalassograph 8

However, thalassographs are difficult to take.
Πυρ, γυνή και θάλασσα‘ as they say and for once I won’t consider that a sexist statement.

On the contrary I’m flattered.

You will see my ‘thalassographs‘ soon in my page in Flickr. Here you are going to see only the two ones that I will not upload there because they were destroyed -as photos. They were good evidence of the adventure though. So not only I didn’t delete them but I’m posting them here. This is what a blog is about and I’m so pleased.

———————————————————————————————————–
Oh ! doctor, there will be wine and honey waiting for you. Only land and water I can’t provide. Satisfy yourslef with the beaches and the paths -for free.
Btw, doctor, there’s a strange thing going on. Go Flickr, «photos tagged ikaria», then switch from «recent» to «most interesting» and browse the first three pages [1], [2], [3].

It’s _____________ (you fill in an adjective -I’m out of wit).

Hey doc, what’s your opinion as a professional? Is it serious?

I’m sure the doctor understands and will prove himself as efficient as always. Only to help the readers, I’ll just say: do the same thing for another place, not an Aegean island, just any place, Sydney Australia for example or  the Himalayas. You will see so-called ‘highlights’ -better term than ‘sights’- like the Opera, the Everest, the monasteries, taken in different angles, with this in with that out, closeups, farouts etc. What are the ‘highlights’ for Ikaria? There aren’t any, according to me. There’s just an ambience, an omnipresent, in-tune, out-of tune vibration…

… vvvvrrrrrmmmmm ……chchchchrrrrrrrrtt …….zzzzz ……vvvvttzz …….nnnnnnnn ….z-z-z-z …tsoukou tsoukou

So, oh! Muse, chill out in Ikaria. Have a break. There is nothing to sing about.

Have a good rest here. There’s so much drama in this world and fun as well, but you can catch up with all it later. There are no highlights here, no bronze statues of warlord kings with their swords on their stalions (come on now -you know what I mean). Or would you, Muse, sing for a donkey ?

Eleni

P.S. that there are no highlights doesn’t mean we should allow ourselves to take advantage of this and build and wound the landscape. Of course, modern houses are comfortable. Also, to build a house on the steep slopes of this island has always been an achievement and an owner should be proud.

But please, oh please, afterwards plant trees around the new builidings. Plant as many as possible. Trees like Ikaria -everybody knows that.  I could put down several technical and aesthetical reasons to do so, but I won’t. I’ll just say: do it for me – stupid or not, I’m a good girl !

Ah! Lady Kirki with your offer of wine and honey on a magical Aegean Isle, and such images of surf and foam as Odysseus might have seen as his ship was wrecked and cast upon an alien shore…I shall need the wit of Odysseus here…you have seen my pictures of pig bones in Flikr…the fate I must escape?…Ikarian Enigma…that says it all. What will you dream tonight? Perhaps like another enchantress «I dreamt I was enamoured of an ass», but that was a summer dream.

Eleni in Ikaria -January 19, 2006

.

.

Good evening readers!

Though I wasn’t able to take a shot of the full moon the other day, I went for a hike and found many beautiful waters the following morning.

Ikarian Mountain stream
.

After that I have been very angry and tense during the last 28 hours.
For starters I tried to html my photos into this blog and it didn’t work. I thought I’d blast it, then I changed my mind.

~~~ This is just another blog, that’s what it is after all. Masterpieces aren’t made for free. ~~~~ 😉
Then my cat came back from her all night wild sex orgies and she gave me a blank look («how stupid of you to think that we know each other».) She emptied her bowl though, and I was pleased, so I didn’t kill her.
I’m jealous of my cat.
.
My cat Felicia is horny
.
All of a sudden the sky cleared up around noon yesterday and I rushed out to take photos. Some came out all right but I forgot myself out there in the fields and so I burnt my lunch ! Fortunately I hadn’t invited anyone. I met my cat in the fileds («who might you be, misses«?) and she let me take one (1) photo of hers
(«I should have charged you 10 euros for that, but I don’t feel like making money today».)
After eating my (burnt) lunch I worked in the garden for a while until the «sorocco», the mad southeastern wind started blowing from the mountaintops. I don’t mind sorocco much because it’s warm, but this time it was cold. So I got back indoors and spent some time on the computer writing my stuff. I also prepared the photos. There was one with a blooming almond tree loaded with an also blooming parasite plant like an ivy and it was such a success. But when I tried to lower the analysis so that I was able to post it in Flickr, the whole composition blurred and the colors fused into each other. I don’t want to upload photos of a size over 130 KB. In other countries they have fast connections even at home, but in Greece the system and the lines are poor and most internet users go on 30.000 bps. Connections also are very expensive.
So if I want my pictures to be seen by the Greeks I have to keep them small and fast. So I’m not posting my tree pic -just another one of those things of today.
St Athanassios Name day: Greeks celebrate their name days, that is the day the church celebrates the saint whose name they were given when they were baptized. I was baptized and named Eleni in a Greek orthodox church in Brussels Belgium. The priest plunged me naked (I was a baby, ok?) three times in the water in a bronze basin looking like a xxxxl old fashioned wine cup. I cried my lungs out and so I became a Christian. From then on my name day is Sts Constantine and Helen’s day on May the 21st.
That was a parenthesis.
So I visited two friends who are she-Athanassios, that is they are named
Athanassia. (Girls can have names of male saints, but not the opposite. Boys aren’t given the names of female saints. For example, although my name is very common, I never met a Greek man called Elenos. The Greeks are very aware that the male sex is unstable and tends to alter. This is why I think they don’t give their baby-boys female saint names, in case they do not grow up to be men but women.)
In one of the two Athanassias’ house I met some people who were hysteric about the bird flu. I had had a couple of stiff drinks, so I was stupid enough not to just say chk-chk-chk and po-po-po but to engage in the conversation.
I said that there was nothing that we should be afraid of because we do not share our houses with the chickens as in some retarded areas of Anatolia or Indonesia, our children play nintendos and not with ducklings in the pools and we have refrigerators so we don’t have to carry live birds around as presents or to the market. It was stupid of me to say these things. People knew all that already and my speech made them feel I was a know-all foreign bitch.
The real reason for their anxiety wasn’t the bird flu but the fact that the people of Ikaria feel (and are) far away from the government in Athens.
They are always afraid that the government would prove inefficient in an
emergency.
However I don’t think there will be an emergency. I have traveled to Turkey and I have seen what the situation is like outside tourist resorts…
As I was feeling tense, a clearly good thing happened: I started exchanging
e-mails with a German hobby botanist who is planning a trip to Ikaria. He visited the island many years ago when there were no paths or directions or anything, a time when local people advised the nature lovers to walk on the main roads so that they wouldn’t get lost or tired. I wrote just for the fun of talking about plants as well as to assure him that this time his visit will be successful -the paths of Ikaria and especially the ones in the way they were re-designed in Rahes, were not planned just for sportspeople or as an alternative to the beach on a stormy day. They lead or run across places. I mean real meaningful ‘places’ -interesting sites. I hope my German friend writes to us a short report from his botanical trip to Ikaria. We do not have any in the file «environment» of
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hikingIkaria .
I also received a few nice comments under my photos at Flickr.
Even that old ‘pink’ beach shot of mine
.
.
attracted attention, oh my.
Now it’s foggy and raining. There was a short blackout too. We rather suffer
from electric pole flu. I felt like screaming, but the power came back soon after.
I turned on the comp and I’m sending out this blog.
Γεια σας τωρα
Go ahead and upload big photos to flickr! They resize them so that nobody downloads the big versions unless they click the «all sizes» button. Some of mine are > 2mb.
Overgrazed Ikarian mountain Atheras
Saturday January 21, 2006 – 01:14pm (PST)
Τhere’s great news about this ! Your instinct brought you to a very remarkable place. Somewhere on a hilltop between the three streams which unite to make Myrsonas you must have ran across several old houses, didn’t you?
These houses are of the 17th century or earlier. Stray goats use them for shelter now and destroy their remarkable stone-made walls and roofs (goats can do that all right -everybody knows that). Anyway, this is the long searched for ‘lost village’ (το χαμένο χωριό). As I wrote in my testimonial for you in Flickr (and thank you for accepting it) Ikaria ‘opens inwards’ not outwards and this was a good example. I discovered it by chance while I was trying to draw a possible new long distance trail across this strange area (I shall call it ‘the sources of Myrsonas -as «sources of the Nile» -Livingstone forgives). I found and followed some very old (almost completely erased) red marks on the ground and some stone piles here and there.
Simon (you know who) sent me several BW photos of the houses of the lost village. I suppose you took pictures too when you were there. If so, even if they are not good enough, please post them in your blog. Σε παρακαλώ πολύ. If you don’t feel like, don’t waste time to write anything under each one. You ‘ve done already so much. I’ll make the comments if that’s ok with you.
