    Explaining the title:
According to old Greek tradition, rhomphaia is the name
of the terrible weapon of punishment carried by Saint Michael.
The word seems to mean or to be related to «thunderbolt«.

«Rhomphaia was also preserved in modern Greek as rhomphaia «big broad sword».
The Thracian rhomphaia contains the stem *rump- in the Latin rumpo, -ere «to break, to tear»

    .

The best pictorial example I could find was by Gustave Doré in John Milton’s Paradise Lost:
    «Michael casts out rebel angels»

    «Him the Almighty Power
Hurled headlong flaming from th’ ethereal sky,
With hideous ruin and combustion, down
To bottomless perdition, there to dwell
In adamantine chains and penal fire,
Who durst defy th’ Omnipotent to arms.
