Omnia magica Ikaria

Dear readers,
you are certainly familiar with the aforementioned quote. It’s usually credited to W.B.Yeats, however, that’s not true. The famous sentence was written by someone who was amazed when he saw for the first time through a magnifying lens the astonishing details of a beautiful wild flower! Therefore, let my blog article be for you today that magnifying lens. Through it you will be able to see some tiny beautiful details and short elusive flashes in the monotonous everyday life of our island. I’m talking about the small, rare and hidden picture instead of the big one -the one which tourism lately has turned into cliché. Let’s save ourselves from that by putting out some powerful subjective worldviews! As my friend Nana whose article I am copying here, says, this is about a…

«A parallel reality: a collection of special moments recorded through the years and stored in our blogs and Flickr streams, from surreal alienation to oddity, from encounters with animals to performances and improvised rituals, from riddles and witchcraft to extravagance, provocation or simple pleasurable moments and postcard-like snapshots, that’s my way to celebrate Dodecaemeron, the Greek 12 festal days of Christmas and New Year, when earth and skies merge, as they say, and daily toilers like us should stop and rest and say to themselves…»

~~p.s. A friend asked why these pictures aren’t uploaded to Flickr. One answer is that many of them would create unwanted activity. The main reason, however, is aesthetic. As I’m saying in a comment under my snapshot of Nana’s post on Flickr, first and foremost this thing should be seen a whole.

Cross blogging 1: Nana’s WP media

.
We ♥ Nana to agrimi's blog
.Katsika, from 'Four Seasons in Ikaria'

Happy Summer, my friends!

Google Image Search for 'egotoagrimi+files+wordpress'
It’s not the right time of the year to post long accounts. In the summer people usually browse magazines and look at pictures. So this article is about pictures, pictures of a special kind, older or newer attachements to my friend Nana’s blog posts, that may have passed unnoticed. The same as her blog as a whole, these pictures are not touristic neither do they aim to giving information about the island. All I may say about them is that they are thrilling and they have provided inspiration to a lot of viewers, and if I may say, a bit of motivation as well, and that not only concerning Ikaria but for all similar places of the world gifted with an exciting outdoors and a culture of freedom. Before I write a full blog review, I’ll stop and just say: it’s not pictures from my beloved Flickr that I look at when I am homesick for Ikaria. I look at these pictures. And when I have time, I click on the links and I also read the articles some of which go back to several years ago.
I encourage you to take the ride. It’s a wild ride, as wild and natural as our island. Sometimes the concept does not make sense, sometimes it does, sometimes there’s humor or doubt, puzzlement, even bewilderment. There is art and fun and yes, in some of them a visitor can find some tourist information too.
But this is not the point. The point is a strong, desicive and creative girl living and rambling in Ikaria and what she thinks about it all. Take a look yourselves and say if I am wrong.
.

Sending love to NanaSomeone just asked. Yes, of course there will be a second part and maybe more to come. Nana to agrimi’s media library from Ikaria is big!.

Sending love to my readers

Who Are the Unknown Cairn Makers ?

.

.

.

Unknown group of hikers have marked with beautiful cairns the entire length of the trail across the SPA “Natura200” (Chalares river gorge and adjacent territories),
from Nas on the northern coast and southwards to the mountain plateau “Erifi”
ΜΟΝΟΠΑΤΙ ΤΩΝ ΔΥΟ ΦΑΡΑΓΓΙΩΝ and then over the top and down as far as the cove “Elias Kampos” on the south coast of the island, on the long, rough trail we call «THE TRAIL OF TWO CANYONS». They have also raised cairns along the transikarian trail which runs on the tops of Mt. Atheras.

Each cairn consists of several well-chosen cubic stones standing one on top of the other, from the larger to the smaller like cones or pyramids. The distance between them is from 50 to 100 meters, so you may have a rough estimate of their number. On a trail of at least 40 km, these elaborate constructions, some of which are clearly artistic, must be over 300!!!

As for the time involved, given that an expert in stones and with the material handy would need no less than 20 min. to choose the right spot and build a cairn like this, the estimate is that it took the unknown group several days and many back and forth hikes to accomplish their feat. Yet, neither the authorities nor anybody from the neighboring villages of Rahes have heard a word about this!!!

Who may these people be? Let’s play the detective. Maybe they are:
“Mad” cairn-maker artists who were inspired and did so because they felt like it.

Swiss hikers, specialists in cairn-building, who plant cairns wherever they go.
votes: 0
Just some good people who offer discreet help and mark trails in an interesting, difficult place
votes: 12
Some ultra-alternative hiking tour agency who have marked this new trail “as their own”.
votes: 1
“Good grouvaloi” from Nas who propose “Elias Kampos” as an alternative refuge –by hiking there!
votes: 0
Shadowy organization supporting the “Natura2000” SPA project.

Any or none of the above. Better not to know. It’s just another mystery of Ikaria.

Μαρμελάδα βατόμουρο

Readers,
I’m proudly presenting to you a jar of Ikarian wildberry jam (or should I say ‘marmelade‘?) sent as a gift for me by Angelos and Nana
. I don’t put it on my bread; me pig eat it with the spoonfulls like a sweet. What talks had we with Nana and others in the club about those wildberries last February. Because February is the worst… The wildberry talk helped a lot. Wildberries bloom between the thorns of their mother bush in spring, the the fruit gets slowly ripe in summer : white, green, black.

(A very strong Greek myth about life and death and childhood is -among other things- related to wildberries. It’s also a famous enigma. No wikipedia link here. I assume you lettered people know this myth. In case you don’t, no problem; I will gladly relate it in some other entry.)

It’s getting better all the time…
In Ikaria the wheel has spun a joly good round.
While it was so gloomy when I first visited as an adult, now in Flickr for instance, you see photos like

by Κatie by Κatie by Κatie by Κatie

by fragitsa by fragitsa by fragitsa by fragitsa

i l o v e y o u. by fragitsa by fragitsa silver and gold. by fragitsa by fragitsa

It’s not about the landscapes and seascapes. There had been great photos before and great minds behind the cameras. I mean the *new* young people and the ambience they generate. This is something new.

At last!

😌

For me these pages is the summer I missed and all the Ikarian summers I miss because I work. And these pages is the bachelors’ party I will probably never have.

Monday September 18, 2006 – 10:18pm (EEST)

Cycles and circles, they spin and always return to the start, you think you’ve been there before. When things were all wrong me brudda said «it will come full circle» and he was right. But then, did I not progress at all? Hopefully you end up where you started a little bit better all the time.

Tuesday September 19, 2006 – 06:51am (PDT)

Believe in progress? You do? Yes, so do I. Maybe a big lie, but it helps me get out of bed in the morning. Philosopher Hegel put it in terms of «thesis-antithesis-synthesis»; he probably had the same problem; looked for a motivation to get out of bed -:lol
Here in Athens it’s lightly clouded and wet in the mornings. My mood is the same.
Good to see the jam from the fruit of the thorn. You have powerful and influential friends.
The «faces» you link to : As they sit around and socialize in Messakti beach, they remind me of seals on some frozen shore of the arctics ! There is a lot of ritual involved in both seals and humans. Yes, it’s a con -*SPIRA*- cy. The island has improved.
(See? my mood is not all bad…)
On the other hand, I saw a new site about Ikaria, http://www.ikaria.gr/ . It’s Ikaria’s domain name, but I doubt if this site is representative of Ikaria. For starters, when you click the button «camping» in hope of getting a few useful tips, all you get is threats; mind you, not warnings, but real THREATS : do not camp because by such law the whole (!!!) island is an archaeological zone (!!!) and the police raids and persecutes campers every other day (!!!) This can’t be true and fortunately several guests in the site’s guestbook argue against this. «Don’t frighten the people» they say. «There is a lot of free camping in Ikaria and it’s ok as long as the campers respect the environment» . Most of them do now. I have seen it. So I assume the «ikaria.gr» admins own or are related to some big hotel and think campers as concurrents. How wrong! Pushed to the extreme it’s as if the automobile manufacturers said «Do not walk or ride bicycles. It’s illegal!»
Anyway the «you-know-who» camped nice and sleasy «you-know-where» in Ikaria last week. They saw no ancient pillars around and they saw no police. Everybody was very nice to them -as usual in Ikaria; reserved and nice : few words and occasionals bowls with grapes and cactus figs. Sweet September… *Lovely*
I became a member of deviantart.com. Not jealous of your glory in Flickr. I’m just testing the possibilities of the famous old photosite. My address is http://agrimi.deviantart.com/ It’s a free account of course. I doubt if I’m ever going to subscribe for a full account. Now Flickr is a 100 times better as a photosite. However, because Deviantart is much older, the archives are very interesting. I’ve been amusing myself trying to choose the 24 bestest photos taken in Ikaria (though w/o titles I can guess from the landscapes and the backgrounds) and I add them in «my favourites». I have right to only 24 favourites; this is a challenge. Have a look.
Καληημεεερρααα…

Wednesday September 20, 2006 – 10:18am (EEST)

Can’t be progressive if you don’t believe in progress Nana. BTW, the Dene concept of chronology is more circular than linear, hard for me to wrap my mind AROUND that, but perhaps because of how they observed the sun and moon and seasons. Wet and gray in the mornings here too lately, summer seemed to end two weeks ago, but I buoy myself by the fact the rivers are up and the salmon are coming home. Sun, moon, seasons, rivers, salmon: cycles.

Wednesday September 20, 2006 – 07:21am (PDT)

This talking about circles and cycles brought to my mind that according to the Roman and Byzantine calendar, September was the first month of the year : «the begining of the Indices» = η αρχη της Ινδικτου : time to close accounts and plan projects. «Thesis – Antithesis – Synthesis» ; this is a very philosophical month. The new wine is in the jars; we ‘ve got to help it with good ‘n deep thoughts otherwise it will go sour.

breaking news: Baby St. John presides Greek solistice festivities again this year.

Pretty young girl jumping the fires of Saint John in Ikaria

Dear readers, I can’t but share with you these wonderful photos from the ritual of «Klidonas» in Ikaria which took place on Saturday, June 24 in a little chapel celebrating Saint John in the forest just outside Christos Raches. Related to summer solstice, this ritual is practiced in many places around the world in wilder or milder ways. The description of the ritual is this:

«The 24th of June is one of the biggest summer festivals of Greek tradition, since the feast of St. John the “Klidonas” is accompanied by the traditional custom of burning the flower wreaths of May and passing over the fires.
The nickname «Klidonas» comes from the ancient Greek word «κλήδων» (klidon), meaning “the predictor sound” and was used to describe the combination of random and incoherent words during a divination ceremony.
Essentially «Klidonas» is associated with a folk, divination process, which is said to reveal to the unmarried girls the identity of their future husband.
According to custom, on the eve of St. John’s celebration, the single girls are gathered in one of the houses of the village and one of them goes to the well to bring the «silent water». It is called that way because she must speak to no one of the way to and back from the well.
At home they pour the water into a clay pot in which each girl throws a personal object, called “rizikari” (coming from the word “riziko” which means destiny). Then and then they cover up the pot with a red cloth and tie it up while praying in St. John. Afterwards they place the pot in open space, where it stays overnight. On that same night, Is said that the girls will see in their dreams their future spouse.
Meanwhile, on the eve of Saint John celebration also revives the well-known custom with fires: At the village square they light a big fire where everybody burns the flower wreaths they made on Mayday, and over which all the villagers jamb. According to the tradition, the fire brings catharsis and people are exempted from evil.»

But enough with Greek lore. Take a look at the photos! 😀
